CASE STUDY:

From Single Dwelling to Duplex: Adapting a Cliffside Home for Dual Living

House to Duplex Conversion

We take a closer look at this project which was unique in its needs, and required plenty of creative thinking. The goal was to transform a sturdy existing concrete structure into two attached homes, each with spectacular views of the ocean. More than just a renovation, it was about making smarter use of the space and enhancing its functionality for dual living.

Project Background

Our client & long-term owner saw an opportunity to better utilise their large home by converting it into two separate residences. Situated on a steep cliff in the south-eastern suburbs of Sydney, the property posed both opportunities and challenges. With stunning ocean views, the design needed to honour the existing structure while optimising the space for two distinct homes, each maintaining the same high standards of quality.

Design Concept

The design approach focused on retaining much of the existing concrete structure to ensure efficient use of the budget while creating two distinct homes. We aimed to preserve the original integrity of the building while designing two spaces with their own flow and functionality. Each home would maintain a sense of connection to the breathtaking surroundings, ensuring a practical yet luxurious living experience.

Challenges and Solutions

The steep site presented the greatest challenge, requiring careful planning to ensure easy living across multiple levels. To address this, we introduced a central spine stairway, providing a clear and smooth vertical connection between floors. Additionally, each residence features a central lift core, allowing for seamless access to all levels, ensuring practicality and ease without compromising the design. This approach also enabled both homes to fully capture the expansive ocean views at every level.

Outcome

This Dual Occupancy project has recently been approved by the local council and is soon moving towards construction. The final design offers a balance of efficiency and luxury, respecting the original structure while creating two unique and functional living spaces. This approach allowed the client to make the most of their property’s potential without sacrificing the design quality or the integrity of the site.

Conclusion

This project highlights how thoughtful design can adapt to complex sites and existing structures, creating customised solutions that respond to each client’s specific needs & requirements. Whether the goal is to maximise the potential of a current property or adapt a home to suit new purposes, every project is an opportunity to realise the unique needs of our client.
